The history of Lockwood’s Carpets
Jim Lockwood entered the flooring industry at sixteen as an apprentice under Elwood Brooks of Mathews County, VA. Upon Mr. Brooks’ untimely death, Jim went on to start his own business, beginning Lockwood’s Carpets in 1974. His wife Debby Lockwood joined the company in 1975 as bookkeeper and interior decorator. The Lockwoods purchased their first property on Main Street in Gloucester Courthouse where they remained for 23 years.
In 1997, they completed construction on a new 11,000 square foot retail store and warehouse facility on Route 17, George Washington Memorial Highway. Jim & Debby still work closely with their staff to ensure that we meet the highest quality standards in floor covering.

The Lockwood’s Carpets family knows the importance of community – in fact, we’ve built our entire business on the trust and support of our own community. In turn, we place an emphasis on giving to that community however we can.
Each year, we partake in the Amos G. West Memorial Spot Fish Tournament, the proceeds of which benefit the Amos G. West Scholarship Fund, providing thousands of dollars’ worth of scholarships to Gloucester High School Seniors.
